Case Study: Mickle Hill matched my criteria

Hugh moved to Mickle Hill from the Lake District in August 2020. Commenting on his move, Hugh says: “I first came to visit Mickle Hill in February 2020, before lockdown started, and I stayed overnight in the guest suite. It was good to see what village life was like before the pandemic. Fortunately, I was able to make the move before the restrictions were imposed. My move went well, although there was much decluttering to do as I was in my previous home for over 25 years.

“My main reason for moving was to downsize following complete retirement. I had a fairly big garden in my previous home, so it’s good not to have the hassle of maintaining it anymore. I was looking for a retirement village with facilities such as a gym and a restaurant and I looked online for possible options across the country and found Mickle Hill, which matched my criteria.

“When I was researching possible options, I did come across a couple of McCarthy & Stone developments reasonably close to me in Cumbria, but their facilities are limited and they only offer apartments. I particularly like the fact that there are bungalows in addition to apartments at Mickle Hill, and they are unusually spacious. I bought a resale two bed dormer bungalow that is situated towards the back of the village with attractive views overlooking fields.

“The homes at Mickle Hill are very well designed and being of modern construction means they are particularly well insulated and noticeably warmer than my previous 1970s bungalow. My heating bills here are much lower!

“I use the facilities as much as I can and between the two lockdowns I started going to the gym three days a week and was really feeling the benefit. I also enjoyed the weekly quiz nights, indoor bowls and pool table - there is a good-sized table in the library. I look forward to when these activities can resume.

“I enjoy walking and plan to explore the North York Moors. I regularly walk into town which is a little less than half a mile. For those who prefer not to venture away from the village, Mickle Hill is on an 11-acre site and has ample outdoor space for exercise.

“Despite the restrictions, I have still managed to meet many of my fellow residents at Mickle Hill. I have taken over editing the Bugle, the Village’s weekly newsletter, which has been a good way of integrating myself into village life and it helps us all to stay connected during lockdown. I have done similar things in the past when I worked in a church office where I edited the parish magazine for many years.

“Once restrictions have eased, I am looking forward to a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, as well as having some friends to stay so I can show them around Mickle Hill.”
