Mickle Hill has "everything you need!"

16/10/2023 Mickle Hill, General, Case Study, Blog

Seventy-six-year-old June Avis McMullan made the move to Mickle Hill in January 2022. And since, she has been enjoying all that the village has to offer. She loves the communal feel, and the warm and welcoming atmosphere. And is never short of something to do, as according to her the village has “everything you need”!

Prior to moving to Mickle Hill, June had visited a friend at the village many times and really loved the friendly feel of the village. June had visited local competitors, but others didn’t have the facilities that Mickle Hill offered – including the restaurant, village shop, the beautiful landscaped gardens, green house and woodwork shop. This is what enticed her to buy her retirement home here.

June has revealed that she is thriving living in Mickle Hill and has even convinced friends from her previous home to make the move. This is because she loves being part of the Mickle Hill community and participating in the plethora of activities available, from making the most of the gym and the bar to getting her hair done in the village salon.

Since moving, June has got to know so many of the residents and has said that she has “not met anyone here who’s not nice” and has found herself to “never feeling lonely, as there’s always someone, nearby.” In addition to this, June has said that she has made even more friends since joining, and regularly goes to the cinema room to watch movies with them.

June’s newfound confidence has even found her at the weekly bingo sessions, and she has revealed that she is soon to be a member of Mickle Hill’s choir. The Rangeford village even holds a monthly Birthday celebration where they celebrate everyone who’s had a birthday in the past month, which June has enjoyed attending and getting to know even more of the wonderful Mickle Hill residents.

Whilst June said, “You don’t have to leave the village as it’s got everything you need,” on the occasion, she ventures out for trips to the town with her friends. Mickle Hill is located in the beautiful setting of Pickering, a lively and welcoming market town packed with a range of independent shops, cafes, tea rooms and pubs. June, when exploring the local areas, utilises the daily bus service that picks up residents right from the village.

Another selling point for June was the fact that she could have her own outside space when she moved in, revealing that this was a vital factor to her when it came to deciding on which property was right for her. June has always been an avid gardener and has a wonderful patio which she looks after with beautiful plants. The 76-year-old has also made an agreement to look after the borders of her property on the grounds of Mickle Hill and is excited to start planting! The green fingered resident also loves the nature and wildlife that cohabits in Mickle Hill, often leaving the blinds open so that she can see the squirrels and bunnies happily wandering around.

June believes “there should be more of these kind of places”, as she says that deciding to live in a retirement village has been a wonderful decision, and being part of a community and having support available if needed is reassuring. She added that moving to Mickle Hill is “the best thing I did” and that she feels “happy and content”.
